My workload has varied throughout my time interning for Dr. Somarelli. During the school year, most of my work will be done over the computer because my schedule will not allow me to drive to Durham every day and do well in my classes. But in the summer I will be going to Durham a lot and experiments in the lab.
December 2018-February 2019:
The main thing I have done in these months is work on my research, abstract and poster for the Consortium For Canine Comparative Oncology Symposium. This project has been a lot of work and somewhat stressful mostly because it is my first time doing these things and I do not know exactly what I am doing yet. I have also started to help write a review paper on marine-derived anti-cancer compounds. This paper is scheduled to be done in June of 2019.
March 2019-May 2019:
During these months I have been working on writing a review paper on the anti-cancer properties of marine derived compounds. This has been very interesting because the marine ecosystem is so diverse and has been vitalized for its healing properties for so long that there is a lot of potential in this area. To write a review paper three other students and I have been reading papers about marine-derived compounds as well as learning about the specific hallmarks of cancer. The hallmarks of cancer paper has shown me the characteristics of cancer and helped me learn more about it while also realizing there is still so much to learn about how all the aspects of it work.
June 2019-August 2019:
During my time in the lab, I have increased responsibility and freedom. I am not comfortable with making major decisions on my own such as how to frame an experiment, but I am able to make smaller decisions on my own comfortably. I have learned how to do many of the experiments on my own and I am getting more and more comfortable with doing them. This work is different than my previous work but I enjoy it a lot.
