Meeting my expectations

December 2018-February 2019:
In the first three months, I have been working I have really enjoyed my experience. I do often feel confused and overwhelmed by certain topics or concepts that need to be discussed, but I am able to do research on them and get caught up to speed. In this first sixth of my internship, I have experienced all three of my learning objectives: integrating technology into biology and molecular researchanalyzing molecular biological data and using information technology to communicate complex biological ideas. I feel very confident that this is what I would like to do for a career and I am looking forward to doing more work and learning more about genetics and cancer research.

March 2019-May 2019:
For the second three months of my internship I have found it slightly hard to concentrate on my assignment. It is very long term and the papers I must read are a little confusing to me. I have worked past this obstacle by finding explanations online about the topic or asking a question. This has helped me a lot and broadened my knowledge of the area. In the second sixth of my internship, I have experienced all three of my learning objectives: integrating technology into biology and molecular researchanalyzing molecular biological data and using information technology to communicate complex biological ideas. I have started doing more college searches and one of the most important things for my school is the possibility to do research like this.

June 2019-August 2019:
For the third three months of my internship, I have been working in the lab. I have enjoyed this part the most compared to the previous updates. I enjoy the hands-on aspect of the job and I feel like I am absorbing more information. In the third-sixth of my internship, I have experienced all three of my learning objectives: integrating technology into biology and molecular researchanalyzing molecular biological data and using information technology to communicate complex biological ideas. I have been preparing my college essays and narrowing down my school list. I am really enjoying the work environment here and hope that where ever I end up will mimic this.

About Me

Hello, My name is Elyse Schechter. I go to Apex High School (roll cougs) where I am a part of the Academy of Information Technology (AOIT) program. In this program, I learned very important soft skills such as interviewing, communicating, and presenting along with hard skills such as computer coding. In this program, I have become a much more confident public speaker and also became Microsoft Word and PowerPoint 2016 certified. I have been exposed to 4 different coding languages (visual basic, C#, SAS, and java) and given the opportunity to participate in an internship at a place of my choice. I interned at the Duke Cancer Institute, which is why this blog was started. Part of my assignments for this internship was to write updates for every 5-10 hours of work and write about what I enjoyed about the workplace.

Reverse Transcription

As I was writing previous posts I realized I did not make one about RT or Reverse Transcription. To explain, I must first describe transcription. Transcription is the process of how DNA is turned into RNA. Therefore RT is the process of RNA being turned back into DNA, or more specifically cDNA (coding DNA).
