How has class prepared you?

When reflecting on what classes prepared me for my internship the first thing that comes to mind is clearly the science classes I have taken. Biology, AP Environmental Science, and Chemistry which not only gave me a passion for this field but also made me aware of most of the concepts that I use. Another class that helped me was Microsoft Word and PowerPoint that I took for AOIT freshman year. I have used word and PowerPoint a lot in order to write or to create presentations on the work I have done. Being aware of these skills allowed me to create aesthetically pleasing presentations very efficiently. Another skill I have used was my presentation skills that were developed through AOIT. I have had to present many things to people throughout my internship and without these skills, I would not have done as well.
One thing that I wished I had learned prior to my internship was learning how to be more independent on doing my assignments. I have been told to do many things with very little instruction and expected to figure out exactly what I was supposed to do without exact directions. This is very different to most classroom environments where teachers give very detailed and specific instructions. I wish I had experienced this before my internship but I am glad that I am doing this now before a career or college environment.

About Me

Hello, My name is Elyse Schechter. I go to Apex High School (roll cougs) where I am a part of the Academy of Information Technology (AOIT) program. In this program, I learned very important soft skills such as interviewing, communicating, and presenting along with hard skills such as computer coding. In this program, I have become a much more confident public speaker and also became Microsoft Word and PowerPoint 2016 certified. I have been exposed to 4 different coding languages (visual basic, C#, SAS, and java) and given the opportunity to participate in an internship at a place of my choice. I interned at the Duke Cancer Institute, which is why this blog was started. Part of my assignments for this internship was to write updates for every 5-10 hours of work and write about what I enjoyed about the workplace.

Reverse Transcription

As I was writing previous posts I realized I did not make one about RT or Reverse Transcription. To explain, I must first describe transcription. Transcription is the process of how DNA is turned into RNA. Therefore RT is the process of RNA being turned back into DNA, or more specifically cDNA (coding DNA).
