Goals for the future

This experience has confirmed my passion for genetics and cancer research and made me super excited for a career in this field. I have decided to major in either genetics or cellular biology and then continue my education to a Ph.D. and possibly an  M.D. with it.

I have learned that I do find human biology fascinating and that it is a field that will not end in the near future. I think that a collaborative space similar to the one at Duke is something I will look for in a career but I mostly look forward to the opportunity to be creative and solve real world problems.

Review Paper

One of my other projects is to help write a review paper on marine derived anti-cancer compounds. I learned a review paper is essentially a collection of others work put together with the authors own ideas and thoughts on how it could be used. We are writing our paper around the set up of the "Hallmarks of Cancer" paper. This is a very well known paper that discusses the characteristics that all cancers usually have. Not only does it list the characteristics of cancer, it describes how each thing occurs to the best of the knowledge they have. My part in this was to write the introduction and conclusion. I am on a team with 3 other college students who are doing research with Dr. Somarelli. They are all very helpful and answer my questions about not only the review paper or related subjects, but about college in general.  Hello, My name is Elyse Schechter. I go to Apex High School (roll cougs) where I am a part of the Academy of Information Technology (AOIT) program. In this program, I learned very important soft skills such as interviewing, communicating, and presenting along with hard skills such as computer coding. In this program, I have become a much more confident public speaker and also became Microsoft Word and PowerPoint 2016 certified. I have been exposed to 4 different coding languages (visual basic, C#, SAS, and java) and given the opportunity to participate in an internship at a place of my choice. I interned at the Duke Cancer Institute, which is why this blog was started. Part of my assignments for this internship was to write updates for every 5-10 hours of work and write about what I enjoyed about the workplace.
